Any body else out there who was born favoring one hand & was cajoled into changing? My parents were not exactly getting along anymore when I was born, & the story from my family goes that I was using my left hand to grab toys, myself, etc. Since my Mom didn't want me to be left-handed like my Dad, she kept forcing me to change to my right, like her. When I was growing up, it was seen as more difficult to grow up left-handed & should be avoided. I remember my cousin Todd was picked on by teachers, students, everyone in grade school for being left-handed.
So now it seems I'm very ambidextrous (not a bad thing...) but have usually used my left side when trying new things. My chiropractor told me that he thinks it can be damaging to not use the side you naturally were given, so I've been slowly working toward switching back.
Any other weirdos, freaks out there with a story like this, & how did it work for you? Incidentally, I'm about equal in the artist/science geek realms, but can be slow sometimes to understand certain things until I get it, usually by example, it's like a light switch going on when I do. I couldn't tell time until I was much older than my peers, but was ranked in the top 2% in the nation in math skills as a kid. ???????????
I'm dying of curiosity, never met another like me in this yet. You out there?

Thu, December 1, 2005 - 3:36 PMKids born around my time were encouraged [I'm not really that old ...35] to use their right hands. Some of them were more prone to dyslexia, I'm not sure why. I was a stubborn leftie. I relented and used scissors on the right, but I still did the fine motor stuff with my left [cut with right, but move paper with left]. -

Fri, December 2, 2005 - 6:03 PMYes, it seems like a kind of dyslexia for myself as well, but not the typical kind. I think it does mess with the way you conceptualize or reason. For instance, logic in Philosophy class just about did me in for a while, then it clicked, but I can read upside down & mirror image just as fast as upright. I'm going to try to find some studies on this...it'd be interesting if someone wants to do a project for a thesis. -

Mon, December 5, 2005 - 10:58 AMI'm strictly a lefty when I write but am ambidextrous in many/most other things. I can use either kind of scissors in either hand. When I tutored math in high school I would sit across from the tutee and read/write the problems upside down (from my p.o.v., right side up from theirs). Freaked some people out. :)
"Incidentally, I'm about equal in the artist/science geek realms, but can be slow sometimes to understand certain things until I get it, usually by example, it's like a light switch going on when I do." This sounds a lot like me too.

Fri, December 2, 2005 - 1:22 AMyeah, my parents were both lefties forced to be righties. though, back in those days, you just weren't allowed to be left handed in school. it was just considered wrong.
